YOU CAN BE A TUTOR

Our Volunteer Tutors and Instructors are the sole providers of weekly instruction to the clients served by Literacy Austin. Students attend a class, or one-on-one instruction, twice weekly, for two hours each session. Team-teaching is encouraged. In a team-teaching situation, each volunteer can take one session per week. We ask each volunteer to commit for at least 6 months. We offer sessions on Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday. Sessions run from 10 am to 12 pm, 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm, or 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at our Center -- 2222 Rosewood Avenue. We also have many off site locations in Austin. Several are affiliated with schools, housing complexes, nursing homes, and community centers. Class times will vary for different locations.

Tutor Training Workshops The content of the 12-hour Training Workshop is based on research in adult literacy which emphasizes the students’ need to see a relationship between what he or she is learning and the problem which sent her or him to our program. Therefore, the curriculum is student-centered. Our goals are their goals.
