YOU CAN BE A TUTOR
Our Volunteer Tutors and Instructors are the sole providers
of weekly instruction to the clients served by Literacy Austin.
Students attend a class, or one-on-one instruction, twice weekly, for two hours each session.
Team-teaching is encouraged.  In a team-teaching situation, each volunteer
can take one session per week. We ask each volunteer to commit for at least 6 months.

We offer sessions on Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday.
Sessions run from 10 am to 12 pm, 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm, or 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm
at our Center -- 2222 Rosewood Avenue.

We also have many off site locations in Austin.  Several are affiliated with schools, housing
complexes, nursing homes, and community centers.  Class times will vary for different locations.

Tutor Training Workshops

The content of the 12-hour Training Workshop is based on research in adult literacy which emphasizes the students’ need to see
a relationship between what he or she is learning and the problem which sent her or him to our program.
Therefore, the curriculum is student-centered.  Our goals are their goals.

Tutor Orientations

Prospective volunteers are first invited to the Literacy Center for a
tour and program orientation.  You will receive an overview of
available volunteer opportunities, a background of the agency
and program, and a brief introduction to the situation of teaching
adults.  Prospective volunteers complete applications, including
area of interest, availability, and contact information.

To meet these goals, the tutors are trained in the following areas:

  •  How to assess what the student needs to learn
  •  How to teach the basic skills using non-traditional textbooks like newspapers, driver’s manuals, etc.
  •  How to identify additional skills needed if the student’s first language is not English
  •  How to teach one-to-one or in small groups (2-7 students)
  •  How to use phonics-based, whole language, and multi-sensory teaching methods
  •  How to use the student’s learning style to identify the best teaching methods
Upon completion of the training workshop, volunteers are matched with students, or a student, depending on their preferences
(times, days, location, and program).

Professional Development Workshops will be offered at least quarterly to volunteers.

Please attend an orientation session before registering for a
Tutor Training Workshop.
